Review gating

Reviews and ratings

Review gating is the practice of filtering review requests so only likely-positive customers are encouraged to post publicly, while unhappy customers are diverted elsewhere. Many platforms prohibit this because it distorts the review ecosystem. It is a reputation risk because it can lead to penalties, content removal, and trust damage if discovered. A safer approach is to ask all customers and improve service recovery for negative feedback.

Why it matters

Gating can trigger platform enforcement and undermine credibility.

Example

A survey asks “Would you rate us 5 stars?” and only high scorers receive the public review link. That is gating.
